BIO
In a career spanning 30 years, André Carrilho has won over 100 awards and honours (below) in illustration, editorial cartoon, animation and caricature, and has shown his work in group and solo exhibitions in Portugal, Spain, Brazil, France, Czech Republic, China and USA. His work has been published in an extended list of newspapers and magazines, including the New York Times, The New Yorker, Vanity Fair, New York Magazine, Independent on Sunday, NZZ am Sonntag, Harper's Magazine, Diário de Notícias and New Statesman.
In 2002 he was awarded the Gold Award for Illustrator's Portfolio by the Society for News Design (USA), one of the most prestigious illustration awards in the world. In 2015 one of his cartoons on the ebola epidemic became viral worldwide, winning the Grand Prize at the World Press Cartoon. That same year he was invited to create a caricature mural to decorate the famous annual Vanity Fair’s Oscar Party.
In 2020 he wrote and illustrated the picture book A Menina com os Olhos Ocupados (The Girl with the Occupied Eyes) that won a Gold Medal at the Society of Illustrators 63 Annual Competition, and was a finalist at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair 58th edition.
In 2005 he founded Video Jack with programmer/musician Nuno Correia, a creative multimedia partnership focused on VJing and live acts combining original animation, customised dedicated software and electronic music. Their latest project was an adaptation of Mikhail Bulgakov's masterpiece Master and Margarita.
Since 2009 he publishes a weekly editorial cartoon in Diário de Notícias.
He's the producer and co-creator of Spam Cartoon, a series of animated editorial cartoons for 360º, the Thursday nightly newscast at RTP Notícias. Spam Cartoon current cartoonists are André Carrilho, Cristina Sampaio and Tiago Albuquerque.
